54th day – 311 days to follow

Temp 33

Fair and mild.

Trimmed up around the clothes yard.

I found where the quail went to roost last night in a little place in the pitch pines where the ground was bare about a foot across and I saw where a fox had crept up on them and caught at least one of them as there was a lot of feathers and some blood.

At noon Archie and I went up to the rocks in front of the Hotel and we had good luck, and got a half bushel each of nice clams.

Went over to drill tonight and we were issued new shoes.

The captain called me in to his office after drill and told me I am to be made a corporal.

Rode home with Dean, Clark and Paul.
